Girl n a box looking anxious

Are you afraid of being judged?

Do you feel ‘not good enough?’

Is Imposter Syndrome holding you back?

Close your eyes, take a breath and imagine instead...

....You are successfully posting online and getting lots of positive comments.

....The last person you worked with has just posted a 5 star review about your business on Google.

....Your peers are asking for your opinion on how to deal with difficult customers, because you are the one person they know who is good at solving people problems.

Hypnotherapy can overcome these deep seated fears and help you be the confident and successful person you want to be.

Afraid of failure

You're all dressed up, ready to go networking, but instead of standing out, you're wearing that special cloak that makes you invisible. It's great because you can hide in the corner, but not so good when you want other people in business to notice you and come and buy your services.

Feeling scared…

To pitch, and tell people how great your product or service is, in case they laugh at you. And while you're hiding, there’s someone else doing almost exactly the same thing, showing off online, getting all the attention and making lots of money, while you're stuck, feeling like an Imposter.

That used to be me too!

So what did I do? I decided it was time to change. I threw away my invisible cloak and picked up something way better instead. And guess what? It was hypnotherapy.

I went from being feeling 'I'm not good enough to do this', to confidently talking about my business at networking meetings.

I stopped worrying about being judged when I posted on social media.

Hypnotherapy really helped me. And now I want to share what I know about hypnosis, mindfulness and CBT to help you.

I only take a few really committed clients a month so that together we can do a really deep dive into your issues.

The Consciousness Myth: Understanding Hypnotherapy

April 10, 20254 min read

When people hear the word "hypnotherapy," it's not uncommon for them to picture someone being “put under,” losing control, or entering a mysterious, trance-like state where their conscious mind is entirely suppressed. This popular image, often fueled by stage hypnosis and pop culture, has created a significant barrier for those who could benefit from hypnotherapy but hesitate due to misconceptions.

In this blog post, I’ll debunk the "consciousness myth" and explore what really happens during hypnotherapy, shedding light on the balance between awareness and therapeutic transformation.

What is the Consciousness Myth?

The consciousness myth is the belief that hypnotherapy requires the conscious mind to be "turned off" or suppressed for the process to work effectively. This idea often stems from the portrayal of hypnosis in films as a form of "mind control," where the hypnotist has complete power over the individual, rendering them unaware of their surroundings or actions.

In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Hypnotherapy is not about losing control—it’s about gaining it. It’s a collaborative process where the client remains fully aware, engaged, and in control of their thoughts and actions.

How Hypnotherapy Really Works

Hypnotherapy is a guided process that uses focused attention, relaxation, and imagination to help clients achieve their goals. Here’s what actually happens during a session:

1. Awareness is Key

Contrary to the myth, clients are fully aware during hypnotherapy. The process involves a heightened state of focus and concentration, often referred to as "focused attention." This allows clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a safe and controlled environment.

2. Collaboration, Not Control

Hypnotherapy is a partnership between the therapist and the client. The therapist provides guidance and suggestions, but the client remains in control at all times. You are an active participant in the process, not a passive subject.

3. Engaging the Conscious and Subconscious Mind

Hypnotherapy works by bridging the gap between the conscious and subconscious mind. While the conscious mind remains active, the subconscious becomes more accessible, allowing for deeper self-reflection and change. This is not about suppressing the conscious mind but rather using it as a tool to explore new perspectives.

Debunking Common Misconceptions

Let’s address some common fears and myths about hypnotherapy:

"Will I lose control?"

No. You are always in control during hypnotherapy. If a suggestion doesn’t align with your values or goals, your mind will reject it.

"Will I be asleep?"

No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as sleep. You’ll remain awake and aware, often feeling deeply relaxed but fully present.

"Can the therapist make me do things against my will?"

Absolutely not. Hypnotherapy cannot override your free will or moral compass. It’s a process of empowerment, not manipulation.

The Role of Awareness in Hypnotherapy

Awareness is a cornerstone of hypnotherapy. By becoming more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, you gain the ability to make conscious choices and create meaningful change. As Jon Kabat-Zinn, a pioneer in mindfulness, once said:

"To be aware of being depressed is not the same as being depressed. To be aware of pain is not the same as the pain."

This awareness allows clients to observe their experiences without judgment, creating space for transformation. Hypnotherapy enhances this process by helping clients access their inner resources and develop new, healthier patterns of thinking and behaviour.

Why the Consciousness Myth Matters

The consciousness myth can deter people from seeking hypnotherapy, depriving them of a powerful tool for personal growth and healing. By understanding the reality of hypnotherapy, individuals can approach it with confidence and curiosity, knowing that it’s a safe, collaborative, and empowering process.

Harnessing the Power of Awareness

At its core, hypnotherapy is about helping you reconnect with your inner self, challenge limiting beliefs, and take conscious steps toward your goals. Whether you’re looking to build business confidence, overcome anxiety, or make lasting habit changes, hypnotherapy provides a supportive framework for growth.

Take the First Step

If the consciousness myth has been holding you back, now is the time to let it go. Hypnotherapy is not about losing control—it’s about gaining it. By working with a professional hypnotherapist, you can harness the power of your mind to create the life you want.
