No, hypnosis is not sleep, and it is not mind control. People under hypnosis remain aware of their surroundings and in control of their actions. Hypnosis cannot make someone do anything against their will, it simply helps them tap into their inner resources for change.
One client described it like being in a deep, warm bath that they didn’t want to get out of. Generally though you feel relaxed and comfortable while still being able to hear and understand everything that is being said to you.
Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for a range of issues, from reducing anxiety and stress to overcoming habits and improving confidence. Its effectiveness depends on the individual's openness to the process, the skill of the hypnotherapist, and the issue being addressed. Studies have shown that hypnosis can be particularly beneficial for pain management, smoking cessation, weight loss, and phobias. While results vary, many people experience noticeable improvements after just a few sessions.
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, where deeply rooted thoughts, habits, and emotions reside. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily engages the conscious mind, hypnotherapy helps bypass conscious resistance, making it easier to adopt new beliefs and behaviours. Scientific research using brain scans has shown that hypnosis can alter brain activity, enhancing focus and making suggestions more effective. This is why hypnosis can be so powerful for changing thought patterns and behaviours.
While hypnotherapy is effective for many people, it does not work for everyone in the same way. Some individuals are naturally more responsive to hypnosis than others. Factors such as willingness, openness, and trust in the process can influence success. Additionally, hypnotherapy is not a magic fix—it works best when combined with commitment and action. For those who struggle with hypnosis, I have alternative techniques like guided relaxation or cognitive-behavioural approaches to help them.
